Not only are we going on this wonderful cruise in Europe but a BIG part of our trip after the cruise is over is for Brian to get his life-long dream of seeing the place where his father was buried as unfortunately he was killed in WWII. Although he knew Brian had been born, he never got to meet him as he was killed by a sniper a few days before the War ended. Of course, Brian’s mother was devastated at his loss and she brought up Brian and his sister Carole all on her own and did a wonderful job!
The Dutch people are very grateful for what the Canadian soldiers did for them that they still take meticulous care of the grave-sites and this is passed down to the future generations. We are meeting up with the people who have taken care of Brian’s father gravesite – Joan, Rens and Annemiek. They too are very excited to meet us and we are going to be spending 3 days with them before we return to Canada. This is going to be the HIGHLIGHT of our trip. Joan is going to meet us in Amsterdam and is going to to show us a bit of Amsterdam before we head up to Halten to meet up with Rens and Annemiek who will be taking us to the gravesite and having us stay with them for a couple of days.
I am also so excited that Joan is taking us to the following two places: http://www.begijnhofamsterdam.nl/home-en and http://www.opsolder.nl/eng/home.php. The latter one is a place I was hoping to see as my friend’s sister told us that if we go to Amsterdam we have to go to “Our Lord in the Attic”. I was so excited when Joan mentioned this place as a possible place of interest and I told her it was a “must see” for us. The other place “of silence” also is very intriguing and I hope we have time to see that too. I really want to go to some “spiritual places” while away as it is so rich in history and spirituality. It is going to be just awesome!!! I can hardly wait!
Five more sleeps and we will be on our way…….stay tuned to my blog!
