We had a great 7 course dinner at Portobello’s last night but by the time we finished, we were so full, we could hardly move. So we were happy to know that today, in Wertheim, we had chosen a 2 hour hike as our excursion to wear off some of this food we are eating. We had to meet our hiking tour guide at 8:30 a.m. It was a chilly misty morning but we wrapped up warmly and we were off for an 8 mile hike (uphill!). Our guide was taking us to the Wertheim Castle (also known as Hohenburg Castle) – the home of the Protestants in the 12th century while other sections were added during the Middle Ages. . Wertheim is situated at the point where the river Tauber flows into the river Main. It is a medieval city with frame houses and and an awe-inspiring castle. I will explain some of what we saw in the pictures below.
This was at the start of our hike, walking through the town of Wertheim.
Another view of the town.
This is the Tauber River running through the town.
The pictures are not as clear due to the mist this morning.
A sign along the way was to yield to the “frogs”!
This was our walking group – 9 of us.
We walked through a little village and this used to be the Blacksmith’s house.
This is written just above the door and it means that God has blessed this home!
This was the Castle we were walking to. As you can see it was on top of a very big hill. The hike certainly had some long up-hills to climb!
This was a view of Wertheim as we got higher and higher up to the castle
we’re getting there
We made it!
This was the moot around the castle walls
This is actually a toilet!!!!!! When the soldiers would guard the castle and had to go to the bathroom, this is where they would go!! Rather disgusting isn’t it!
The clock in town only has one arm because the hour of the day did not mean anything to the occupants of the castle when they looked out. Not sure this makes sense to me!
This is on the side of the Church in town. It is a picture of statue of Mary (although they refer to her as Madonna??) holding Jesus but he is represented as a man not a boy).
We made it back to town and this was Eric, our tour guide. The cafe to the right of this picture is where Brian and I stopped to get a coffee to warm us up!
We asked for a coffee with “cream” and they thought we meant “whipped cream”; it still tasted delicious! My camera lens started to mist up in the cafe just as I was taking these pictures as did my glasses!
We had to be back on the ship by 1:00 and we have been sailing to Rudesheim since. We had a really nice afternoon sitting with our friends, Richard and Roseleigh at the front of the boat watching the scenery pass us by. When we get up in the morning, we will be in port and tomorrow sounds very busy. We will be taken to the Siegfried Music Museum, and go for a Cable Car Ride up a mountain to look over the city. We only have the morning in Rudesheim and then we set sail for the Rhine Groge and Braubach. Apparently there will be a lot of castles on the Romantic Rhine and our cruise director warns us it will be like watching a tennis match as our heads go left to right and taking pictures of all these castles.
When we arrive in Braubach (around 5:00 p.m.), we will be bused to the Marksburg Castle where we will be going to a Medieval Dinner and show. Sounds like a fun-filled day as is usual on this cruise!
