Cadiz, Spain

We ported in Cadiz this morning around 10:00 a.m.  It is an absolutely beautiful day out – about 25 degrees but with the humidity it felt hotter than that. The hop-on/hop-off buses were right outside the docking terminal but we decided to head off on our own as were right in the city center already.  On my research before the trip, I had written down to see the Cadiz Cathedral and a place called Torre Tavira which is an observation tower.  This city is just full of tiny little streets going here there and everywhere and it didn’t take us long to get lost and although we found both places eventually we definitely took the long way around to get to them and in some cases ended back on some streets twice! Brian and I decided to go up the Torre Tavira which had 161 steps to the top but was well worth the view.  They also have what they call a Camera Obscura which is a little room in the middle with a bowl-like structure in the middle and you stand around this bowl and they open up the light coming in from the top and there are mirrors that show the city in real time.  You could see people on the streets and the guide moved the mirrors around so you could see the entire city.  It was quite interesting.  Our friends did not want to go up the tower so they went off to a café but we couldn’t find them after so we walked around and tried to find our way back to the ship and we did get a bit lost but eventually found our way!

We first found the Cadiz Cathedral.  We didn’t go in as they charged 6 euros each and we felt that was a bit much.

Trying to figure out where to go next!

This is how the entire city looked, one small  narrow street after another!

This is the beach area – we took this picture from the Torre Tavira.

This is the bowl-shaped Camera Obscura before they turned off the lights and opened the light and mirrors and you could see the whole city and pan in and out on points of interest.  It was quite unique how it worked!

Another Monument but again nothing written in English, so we have no idea what it represents! Note the beautiful blue sky though – it was an absolutely beautiful day.

We are in Cadiz until midnight tonight and then tomorrow we will be in Gibraltar.  One of the places we are very excited to see.  We have a booked excursion – Stroll on the Rock – here so I’m hopeful that I will have better explanations of the things we see there.  PLUS it is British Territory so everything will be in English!

We are  now going down to the docking terminal in Cadiz which has a free wi-fi connection and I hope this blog entry is not too long that it times out before it publishes.  If it does do that, I may have to split it in two. Anyway, hopefully it works okay if the wi-fi connection is high speed.  We find the internet speeds seem to be quite slow.  I will post again after Gibraltar and hopefully I can find a free Wifi connection for that as I’m sure I will have lots of pictures.
